The american black metal band, Pact, released “The Infernal Hierarchies, Penetrating The Threshold Of Night” earlier this year. This release really jumped out and knocked me over and I really was interested in finding some more about the band. I wanted to interview them and ask some questions to learn a bit more about Pact. Here’s what they had to say…
First off, can you give us a brief history of Pact for those that aren’t familiar with it?
We formed several years ago under a different name, to create the music we have loved our whole lives. After releasing one album we changed our name to Pact when we took a more extreme direction with our black metal, and have since been signed by Moribund Cult Records and began taking part of live rituals, and releasing material.
Can you give us some insight into your personal philosophy and how that motivates your music and lyrics?
Our personal philosophies differ, but we all share a total disgust for organized religion. Of course this does help us to freely write brutal music without the limitations of good and evil. Occultism plays a major role in all lyrics as well.
I particularly enjoyed ‘Baal-Zebub Lord of the Flies’, and it occurred to me sometime after that this could be a concept album, was this intended?
From a lyrical standpoint yes, but the music wasn’t written around those ideas. It was an after thought. Each song represents different demons.
Can you tell us about your recording process?
We have done it a little different on all three of our albums, but the latest album we recorded in our home studio. When we were done recording the tracks we sent them to Anthropicide studios in Belarus to have the album mastered.
What are your thoughts on the state of black metal? Or maybe black metal is to narrow, how about the state of American metal?
Just like the rest of the world there are some bands that appeal to us and some that do not.
Are there any American black metal bands that you are watching and listening to?
There are lots of bands that come out that we are familiar with that we have an interest checking out when there new albums are released.
I noted that your music was not overproduced, do you have to go to any special lengths or use any special equipment when performing live to capture that same brutality.
When we play live we just use our half stacks and guitars so the distortion does not end up the same as it would be in the albums.
With 2014 being half over and your new record out now, what are your touring plans if any for the remainder of the year?
We have a few shows planned, one of which is coming very soon, July 26th in Baltimore at the sidebar with Inverted Trifixtion, Dispellment, Anticosmos, and Hex Temple. The next show we have booked isn’t until September 19th in Wilkes-Barre PA for the two day festival Wrath of the Goat Fest 3 which features many bands such as Kult ov Azazel, Summon, Wormreich, and Neldoreth just to name a few.
What does 2015 hold for Pact?
We are already working on a new album, which I imagine will be complete and maybe even released sometime in 2015, and we will likely be playing more dates throughout the year as well.
