Jesus Fucking Christ - Homophobia Is Like Totally Gay Jesus Fucking Christ is the brainchild of Norway’s ‘one-man wrecking crew’ Remi Semshaug Langseth, and this E.P. “Homophobia is Like Totally Gay”, is his debut. The name, he says, is all about an evocation of surprise and awe but you suspect if it pisses people off then it’s a bonus. His sound is described as ‘electronic hardcore’ and he is being championed as a new and exciting talent. The whole package is certainly designed to grab your attention.

It begins with ‘Doomsday Device’ and a wash of warm fuzz, then a bedrock of ominous synths is laid down a la John Carpenter‘s movie soundtracks. It is unexpectedly restrained but really works as an extended intro for the church-bashing ‘Pope on a Rope’ – and here we get to see what he means by ‘electronic hardcore’. The scratchy extremity of the beats and screams are slowly tempered by a more poppy vocal style employing Trent Reznor-style croons on the bridge. The lyrics and song themes seem to blend across the tracks as titles and phrases crop up repeatedly and there’s more going on here than the provocative moniker and daft song titles suggest. Granted, on the surface level this is mostly the sound of a ‘one man wrecking crew’ but the E.P. is neatly constructed to feel like one piece and has bags of textures and strong hooks. ‘I’m A Gonna Kick U In Da Face’ sounds pretty much as you’d expect, being a stuttering, glitchy punch up but there’s more subtlety elsewhere.

‘Love You To Bits’ begins like one of those creepy stalker ballads churned out by Korn but as the horns appear the song begins to change from queasy horror to melancholic beauty, not tonally dissimilar to The National as remixed by Aphex Twin, surprisingly.

‘Sometimes My Arms Bend Back’ pulses and flares like The Prodigy and with children chanting the band’s name, taut metal guitar and anguished vocal is a successful marriage of Faith No More and Refused. Langseth has impeccable taste and considerable cheek, I’ll give him that.

I’m not moved to feelings of awe or even surprise by this release, but this is still a very impressive debut by a musician I shall be keeping an eye on.
