Utopium - Vicious Consolation-Virtuous TotalityThink of Portugal, what comes to mind? Well, with my black metal background I immediately think Corpus Christii, but my mood is immediately dampened by garbage such as Moonspell. In light of all this, what is an angry bunch of musicians into sludge, crust and grindcore to do about all this? The answer is simple. Create a sludge/crust/grindcore hybrid that crushes all in its path.

Enter crushcore act Utopium of Portugal, on a mission to annihilate your senses and penetrate the very depths of your sanity with a grinding crust-sludge, or if you want to be clever, crushcore (it’s going to catch on, bear with me). Their first full-length is titled “Vicious Consolation / Virtuous Totality” and it is the epitome of noise and chaos. It encompasses sludgy riffs, groovy grindcore rhythms and that filthy crusty guitar sound accompanied by blast-beats that will leave you in utter disarray. On top of all this, add a man who is very angry about everything screaming at the top of his lungs.

Because of this unique culmination of various sub-genres, it isn’t just a monotone racket that’s over in seconds, it does offer some structure with variant tempo, which makes it all that more chaotic. Think Converge, but dirtier, crustier and throw some sludge at it. That basically sums it up.

Seeing as it isn’t really possible to classify it under one sub-genre, just go with crushcore, because it will fucking crush you into nothing but dust. So, what these lads have produced is basically the Death Star of extreme music/noise.

Utopium‘s release is out now and it is bound to make a few heads roll, cause it is like nothing I have ever heard before. Bloody marvelous is what it is. Absolute perfection. Taking everything from your favourite sub-genres and just speeding it up and making it dirtier.

If you’re into noisy music and you want something that pushes the very limits of everything you have ever heard, Utopium’s “Vicious Consolation / Virtuous Totality”. You will not be disappointed.

I would highly recommend this to fans of Full of Hell, Bacchus and Fistula.
