Hellbastard - Sons of Bitches [Review]Ever hear the term “Ripper Crust”? Sure you have! Hellbastard released a demo way back in ’86 coining the term “Crust” even if Amebix is seen as the begin and end all of crust. Since 86’ the Hellbastard lads have been doing their best to keep crust as dirty as possible and ripping assholes open over the last two decades and a bit.

So their last major release was in 2009 and before that it was 1990 taking into consideration some compilations in between and some EP’s and splits. So it was time for a new EP titled “Sons of Bitches” which was released last year. It’s not as dirty as one would expect from the crust rippers. That being said, it still has some killer fucking riffs. It embodies a lot more crossover thrash elements than it does pure crust. If you’re not a fucking crust princess or part of the crust royal family like some of the assholes I saw at OEF this year, then who the fuck cares if the sound is more balanced? Nobody, that’s who, you vegan elitist fucks.

Right, back to “Sons of Bitches”. The record starts off a bit slow with a very tame first track, it gets a lot ballsier closer to the end and drops into the title track ‘Sons of Bitches’ which is wall-to-wall crusty crossover thrash. There is a lot of structure within the tracks and it’s really something you can enjoy. Killer leads and rhythms with the drums helping to tie up the sound tighter than a nun’s cunt!

‘System Whore’ is a standout track in my opinion and it does slow down considerably towards the end, which gives the record that much needed variety in tempo and the bass does get a bit of spotlight. It’s a very atmospheric section within the album and displays some quality song writing from the bastards!

The rest of the album follows in the same vein as the above mentioned. A good combination of ballsy riffs and crushing drumming, which is accommodated by good song writing and more atmospheric sections with a bit more melody than your average crust album. I think that’s absolutely fantastic.

The riffs definitely are a lot thrashier than they would usually be and in some of the tracks you can pick-up on that good ol’ d-beat drumbeat we all love so much. There is even some reggae in there somewhere, but I won’t ruin that surprise.

In my opinion Hellbastard’s “Sons of Bitches” is an awesome EP release from the geysers and I am looking forward to a full-length record in the near future. If you like bands such as Extreme Noise Terror, Amebix, Discharge, Axegrinder and Effigy you would definitely enjoy this EP. Open mind not included.
