Fey, indie shoegaze darlings F.T.W. Boogie Machine return with more swoonsome sonic lullabies…..just kidding. I think you can probably guess what this bunch of Icelandic reprobates sound like without too much help from me. Made up of various members of other Helsinki rock bands including Soulgrind and Gloomy Grin, these four guys got together in 2010 to play, in their words – ‘Venomous Psycho Motor Rock and Roll‘.
Venom and Motörhead are the stated twin engines of this machine, but their assertion that psychobilly and country are in the build isn’t discernible to my ears. The band’s local reputation spread and after being asked to player a biker festival it seems these boys decided to take it a little more seriously. In fact they’ve released two earlier EP’s and a debut album, “Bulls Eye” before this mini-album. Considering these guys seem to spend most of their time drinking and riding their hogs, it’s a pretty impressive work rate!
How do I know how they spend their time? Well apart from their very illuminating and amusingly slapdash biog, their lifestyle is right there in every song. ‘Hot Wheels Cold Steel’, about loving your bike, even if it’s a piece of self-built junk, and their appallingly ramshackle version of The Dead Kennedy’s ‘Too Drunk To Fuck’ tell you all you need to know about the world of F.T.W.Boogie Machine. The band do have a crack at playing the blues on ‘All Downhill’, but are much better at gnarly rock n roll. ‘Do You Want It All’ has a touch of Turbonegro in it’s filthy thrusting and as such never fails to raise… a smile.
It’s all good knockabout fun (apart from that awful cover version), but to me it sounds like the kind of effort you’d pass about to mates rather than release to the world. I think the old cliche holds true of F.T.W. Boogie Machine, they love playing this music, and if anyone else likes it, it’s a bonus.
