The Inspector Cluzo - The 2 MousquetairesFrench metal and yours truly, it’s a passionate love affair. I simply can’t get enough from bands like Gojira, Hacride, Blut Aus Nord, Carnival In Coal, Trepalium and Klone. My latest discovery is a band called The Inspector Cluzo. They are as far removed from anything metal as one can imagine, but they’re a blast to listen. Let’s have a closer look at  “The 2 Mousquetairs”, their latest album, has to offer.

In spirit The Inspector Cluzo comes fairly close to the twisted humor of the sadly defunct and sorely missed Carnival In Coal. In the songwriting department they have the same knack for catchy tunes as Freak Kitchen, Gnô and the solo albums from Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal. Yes, one of the guitarists from Axl N’Roses. There’s a famous expression that you either have the funk or not, but these Frenchies certainly have it. Songs like “Fuck The Bobos”, “Wild And Free – The Indignés Song” and “The 2 Mousquetaires Of Gasconha” are just as funky as Parliament and Funkadelic in their prime. I’m sure that George Clinton and Bootsy Collins would certainly approve of this album.

The Inspector Cluzo lads aren’t afraid to incorporate some good ol’ Soul elements into their eclectic musical madness. Their splendid rendition of Curtis Mayfield’s “Move On Up” and “I Want To MMM The Wife Of The French President” (oh hello mrs Hollande, nice to meet you) are clear proof of this. I also love how they managed to include the main theme of “Je T’aime Moi Non Plus” by Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg within that song. Cheesy? Perhaps, but it works brilliantly within the “The 2 Mousquetairs” framework. Other high points are the funky “Power To The People” and the incredible laid back groove that dominates “Fuck Free Hugs”.

It’s albums like “The 2 Mousquetairs” by The Inspector Cluzo that make me fall in love with life again. The songs are ridiculously catchy and well-crafted. It doesn’t matter how cheesy things may get, this record a simply a blast to listen to. I’ve found my musical prozac of this year. Time for another spin..and another spin..well, you get the picture..
