Milk White Throat are a progressive metal band from Brighton. Other than that little tidbit, there is almost no information to be gleaned on-line about the band. I guess that’s OK as it lets the music do the talking, but personally I like to find out a bit about the bands that I’m listening to.
Progressive music as a general rule is either extremely boring or extremely captivating for me, although I think I can count on one hand the number of proggy types of bands that I actually enjoy. Many times the bands just get into excessive noodling and the songs seem to drag on forever with no real point, with most songs exceeding the ten minute mark just because they have to and not because they need to.
Fortunately, even though “Mother” has two songs that are over ten minutes long, they do not feel excessive or overdone. In fact, believe it or not, time is not even a factor with this album. There is no looking at one’s watch wondering if the track has passed the 5 minute mark yet, no absent day-dreaming while the song plays endlessly in the background. Nope, these guys can play and write a good song at the same time.
The album opens with ‘Home’ a ten minute powerhouse of a track which incorporates some Mastodon-ish vocals. It sounds like the band has a different vocalist or two as the vocals on the next track ‘Mother’ sound completely different than the vocals on the first track, with a much “cleaner” style. The trade off works and the contrasting rough and smoother vocals makes the album much more enjoyable. Milk White Throat does very well at keeping things interesting transitioning from rock to jazz to heavier stuff in between.
I was kind of surprised to find out that the band is unsigned as they have the chops to play with the big boys and it would be nice if they could land themselves on a bigger tour at some point to gain themselves some exposure as “Mother” is a good EP. Top tracks are ‘Mother’ and the album closer ‘Still’. Pick the album up and support the band. Hopefully this is just a taste of what’s to come from Milk White Throat.
