According to their biography pop/prog/shoegaze formation Kandy Kolored Tangerine is one of the hottest newcomers in their native Denmark. I’ll talk their word for it, because I’ve never heard of them before. The band’s international breakthrough is only a matter of time, thanks to the dream-like quality of their latest album, entitled “Skygaze”.
Usually my musical diet consists more experimental and darker sorts of metallic noise, but every now and then I like to take a trip across the border in order to keep things fresh and interesting. “Skygaze” is the perfect antidote after listening to Obake, Blut Aus Nord, Killing Joke and Deathspell Omega. These Danes share the esoteric dreamlike quality of The Gathering, Anathema and Mogwai and there’s even a bit of Sigur Ros to be find in their music.
Kandy Kolored Tangerine’s main strength lays in their ability to write beautiful songs which are layered and dense enough to appeal to the prog, shoegaze and post rock crowd, but thanks to the extensive use of pop music structures should also appeal to a more mainstream oriented crowd. Songs like ‘Mother Nature’, ‘Time Machine’ and ‘The Angels Are Coming Home’ can easily rival with any song put out by Muse, Owl City and Coldplay recently. It’s just an indication of how good “Skygaze” is.
“Skygaze” is the culmination of the best elements from the prog/shoegaze and pop music world. The music sounds very familiar, yet Kandy Kolored Tangerine managed to give it an original spin of their own. Breathtakingly beautiful!
