No point in beating about the bush here. ‘Days of Defiance’ was a pretty damn fine album, but with ‘Few Against Many’, Firewind have really raised the bar. Darker, moodier and heavier; this is the album we really wanted them to deliver.
This is Firewind at their finest, a complete unit delivering straight up “bang your fucking head” metal. Apollo Papathanasio spearheads the assault with the kind of vocal performance that sends shivers down your spine one moment, then rips into your guts the next. Just listen to the contrast between “Another Dimension” and “Edge Of A Dream (featuring Apocalyptica)”, two superb, yet polar opposite tracks that leave your mouth agape, the guy has some serious pipes.
“Wall Of Sound” as an opener is bordering on a GBH assault, as it builds into a monster. Apollo and Gus G powering out of the starting blocks, showing what a formidable partnership they have. The whole package is heavier and moodier, “Losing My Mind” is a beast; a real stand out for the album, rammed with soaring crescendos and dark raw emotion.
This is a Firewind album, and a Firewind review, so let’s just pretend there’s some ramble about Gus G and Ozzy… just so that box is ticked.
Gus is an outstanding guitarist, blistering, fresh and innovative. This album allows him to express himself, but it’s still a complete band effort. There’s frightening fretwork in abundance as well as restraint. All the fretboard acrobatics are perfectly justified and at times he still holds back, he doesn’t need to explode into the “over the top look at me I’m a guitar god” shreddery. Even so, this album will probably still do wonders for ESP Guitars. The bedroom six stringers and Gus G wannabes, wanting to emulate their idol will even more so be screaming for his latest signature guitar.
This is Firewind’s seventh album, and it’s their strongest to date.
Pure raw metal played with passion and fire… go buy it.
