DevilDriver– Jim Marshall Stage (Main Stage) – Sunday 11:50 – 12:20
Sunday morning in the sunshine is probably the perfect time to go and get your face smashed in by DevilDriver, which is exactly what I decided to do. Make no mistake about it, wherever DevilDriver are, is where the party is, case in point at least 3 main stage circle pits have opened up before the band has even stepped foot on stage, such is the power DevilDriver has over this particular crowd.
For those of you that know, I love DevilDriver stupid amounts, probably because they are one of the most consistent bands currently in the game, today is not exception, they burst out the gates with a vicious hunger that is hard to ignore, conjuring up ground shakingly evil circle pits along with them.
A brutal ‘End of the Line’ gives way to ‘Horn of Betrayal’ which sounds as monstrous as ever. DevilDriver are old hands at this and know they need to keep the energy levels high ‘Dead to Rights’ connects like a punch to the throat which is convenient given what is currently going down in the pit. Seriously, when the band dishes up tracks like ‘Clouds Over California’ and ‘I Could Care Less’ its pretty hard not to go out there and want to punch someone in the face.
Many argue that DevilDriver should be higher on the bill due to their current status, but for me personally they have a no bullshit attitude, and play with a directness that is suited to much shorter sets, especially ones where the crowd needs to wake the fuck up and work a little bit, I as much as I hope that DevilDriver don’t end up being the eternal opening act, there is a lot to be said for the way they handle any and all situations they are placed in, even more so when you consider that today they have handed in today’s first truly memorable performance.
