Sonisphere Sunday arrived with a healthy hangover, it certainly wasn’t a bangover after the disappointingly damp squib that was The Sisters Of Mercy… Thankfully, there was a fine cure on offer first thing in the shape of Elvis Metallers Volbeat! We love this band here at TINAS Towers and no size of hangover would stop us seeing them!
Opening the Apollo Stage to a sizeable crowd, most of whom were also nursing hangovers and bangovers from the Saturday nights highs and lows! Michael Poulsen and Co wasted no time in getting things started. Opening with the bouncy ‘The Human Instrument’ got the crowd moving, and they didn’t stop during the 10 track set.
A mixture of classic favourites and tracks from their latest album “Beyond Hell/Above Heaven”, Volbeat had it nailed. ‘Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood’ got the circle pits started, with the intro to ‘Sad Man’s Tongue’ a brief moment of respite before the carnage began again! And the Dusty Springfield cover ‘I Only Wanna Be With You’ is now a cult classic with the fans. There wasn’t a foot that wasn’t tapping, or a head that wasn’t nodding, well, apart from those crazy souls that habituate the pits who were too busy jumping around to tap their feet.
Volbeat were the perfect tonic for those Sunday morning aches and pains, blowing away any lingering hangovers, setting us up for a full days metal depravity. Just the way we like it!
