This year for our Top 10 we asked the team to put together their Top 10 albums of 2011, because everyone’s taste is different we decided to approach the ThisIsNotAScene Top 10 scientifically… It was compiled by taking the score (1st place = 10pts – 10th place = 1pt) of the placings in the teams’ Top 10s and then adding the rating from the review. Here is what turned out to be the scientifically compiled Top 10 albums of 2011.

Machine Head - Unto the Locust

Machine Head – Unto The Locust

A definite contender for album of the year, The only down point I can see is only seven songs, would have been nice to have more, but that’s just me being greedy again. Essential listening!

Evile - Five Serpent's Teeth

Evile – Five Serpent’s Teeth

This is what we want, kids; this is what we need. Seriously punchy riffing, effortlessly memorable tunes, “Five Serpent’s Teeth” is the sound of a band not just taking several steps forward but making a potentially career defining leap. It is an absolute bloody stormer of a record and and will, in time, be filed under Stone. Cold. Classic.

Steven Wilson - Grace For Drowning

Steven Wilson – Grace For Drowning

Steven Wilson’s “Grace For Drowning” – it’s this year’s best prog album so far! Simply perfect!

Mastodon - The Hunter

Mastodon – The Hunter

Gone are the soundtracks to the apocalypse, the tidal wave of guitar on “Crack the Skye” and the unswerving riff of “Leviathan”, but say hello to a richer, condensed Mastodon with many stories to tell, some of them possibly at Christmas.

Unearth – Darkness In The Light

This is without a doubt the best work of Unearth to date. “Darkness In The Light” is eleven power packed tracks. Perfect timing of music and vocals remind everyone that Unearth is a true force to be reckoned with. The team of McGrath and Susi are flawless on this release. McGrath and Susi provide a duelling guitar team second to none. Slo and Foley are in lock step but not so much that they don’t allow each other to shine on their respective parts. Phipps is in perfect pitch and delivers with such power and feeling, adding emotion packed layers to their music. When these individuals become a collective it is nothing short of metal magic.

TesseracT - One

TesseracT – One

Brilliant, stirring, intellectual, smart-aleccy but curiously emotional and tender at times, TesseracT throw you a whole heap of emotions and textures, often simultaneously, but never without thought or precision. There is some seriously smart brain power being applied here but it’s not math metal, all angles and shapes but no soul or core. This record and the band are going to soundtrack much of your year and will win loads and loads of critical praise and awards. It’s deserved.

Anthrax - Worship Music

Anthrax – Worship Music

“Worship Music” is an album that ‘Thrax fans will lap up. It cements their status within the Big 4, and challenges a top three finish. It’s familiar and comfortable and what you would expect from these veterans. It checks all the Anthrax boxes; comic book-esque titles, Zombie and horror film references aplenty, huge faultless rhythms, soaring vocals and the immense power to make the listener want to mosh.

Uneven Structure - Februus

Uneven Structure – Februus

At the start of this review I wrote that I wasn’t sure whether I loved or admired “Februus”. In the course of writing this review of this brilliant, uncompromising debut album from a band of serious promise, I have changed my mind. I both admire and love it. The bar has been raised. And how.

Opeth - Heritage

Opeth – Heritage

“Heritage” will certainly please the more progressive minded part of the Opeth audience. It’s also good to see Mikael Åkerfeldt and Co. dare to let go of their musical formula that served them so well in the past.

Septicflesh - The Great Mass

Septic Flesh – The Great Mass

All in all, this epic masterpiece is one highlight after the next. Surprise of sounds around every corner, drawing us into a web we cannot escape from. This is a piece that must be heard and if you have never experienced SepticFlesh, now is the time. “The Great Mass” firmly establishes this Grecian quartet as metal juggernauts.
