The person whose job it was to choose the running order of The Big 4 must have had sleepless nights about it… Third on The Big 4 bill were Megadeth, Dave Mustaine and the boys could have easily been chosen above Slayer but had to settle with third place on the bill.
Shawn Drover was first to make his entrance, springing up from behind the drum riser to great applause, the cheers rang out again as David Ellefson joined him, Chris Broderick was next to enter the stage before the man himself, Dave Mustaine, walked onstage carrying his new signature double headed Dean 12/6 string combo, we must admit to letting out a little sex wee when we saw it, it’s a thing of absolute beauty and yes, we do want one!
Once again, we were treated to a greatest hits set with ‘Trust’ kicking off proceedings, quickly followed by ‘In My Darkest Hour’ and ‘Wake Up Dead’. Mustaine seems like a changed man, he was actually smiling for the majority of the time and actually looked like he was enjoying himself. Surrounded by old friends, in Ellefson, newer and very talented friends in Shawn Drover and Chris Broderick, it’s no surprise that the smile is once again back on the lips of Mustaine…
A quick change of guitar to another one in his line of signature flying Vs, in fact, he went through the entire series during the set. Mustaine also revealed the name of their forthcoming thirteenth full-length album, the imaginatively titled “TH1RT3EN”.
Rolling out the Megadeth hits and crowd favourites, including ‘Hangar 18’, ‘Sweating Bullets’, new track ‘Public Enemy No.1’, ‘Head Crusher’, ‘A Tout Le Monde’, ‘Symphony Of Destruction’, Peace Sells’ and ‘Holy Wars…The Punishment Due’, had the assembled masses in raptures, including us, belting out the lyrics at the top of our lungs, in the now glorious sunshine.
It’s moments like these that make everything worth it, a truly memorable set that will live with us for a long, long time!
