“Tuesday is the new Friday” proclaimed Peter Gallagher, Ramming Speed’s front-man, as the Boston grindcore thrashers took to the stage on a cold Tuesday night at the Rescue Rooms in Nottingham. And that was that, the onslaught began… no pausing for breath, a 30 minute set of ferocious grindcore that was heavy on the trash, a perfect start to the evening’s entertainment! Ramming Speed were a new band to us but will be regularly heard blasting from the speakers at TINAS towers from now on. If you haven’t heard them yet, what the hell are you waiting for… go check them out!
After being suitably warmed up by the excellent Ramming Speed, it was the turn of California stoner metallers, Saviours to penetrate or eardrums. Again, Saviours were new to us and we had no idea what to expect from them. What we heard was a mixture of The Sword and Megadeth, or maybe Slayer after a 3 day smoking session with Cypress Hill. There was a real danger that things could have fallen a little flat after frenetic openers but Saviours held their own and we really rather quite liked them too! Stand out tracks from the set were ‘Burnin’ Cross’ and ‘Apocalyse World Split’. Another band well worth checking out if you haven’t heard them already!
Now it was time for the main event… Municipal Waste!!! Municipal Waste have been a favourite of ours for years and after the disappointment of them pulling out of Sonisphere, we couldn’t wait for this show to come around. The guys took to the stage; Ryan was not only carrying his custom MW axe but also a good old bottle of Newcastle Brown. Top marks, Ryan!
The Rescue Rooms were packed, it must have been sold out or very close to being so… The crowd, who had been quite restrained until now, went absolutely crazy as Municipal Waste launched into their opening salvo of an Intro leading into ‘Blood Drive’ and ‘Accelerated Vision’. The circle pits began on their own as ‘Beer Pressure’ was played and they got more and more energetic as ‘Headbanger Face Rip’ and ‘Terror Shark’ came up.
It wasn’t long before the security guards were earning their money as the crowd surfing started, Tony Foresta told the crowd he’d asked for the barrier to be removed for the show to get the party started but alas, rules are rules! Municipal Waste blasted through ‘Divine Blasphemer’ and ‘The Thrashin’ of the Christ’ before unleashing ‘Wolves of Chernobyl’ upon the crowd, members of whom were now jumping into the pit from the balcony above. The place was going crazy for Municipal Waste and they duly obliged with a bass solo from Landphil that lead into ‘Sadistic magician’ and ‘Sweet Attack’.
With the intensity in the room now cranked up to maximum, Municipal Waste dropped ‘Black Ice’ and the brilliantly short ‘I Want to Kill the President’ on the crowd. The circle pits and crowd surfing continued through ‘Acid Sentence’ and ‘Mind Eraser’. The main set was closed out with ‘Nailed Casket’, ‘Wrong Answer’ and ‘Unleash the Bastards’ along with the now customary crowd surfing and circle pits. After a very brief break, during which the crowd chanted the anthemic “Municpal Waste are gonna fuck you up!”, the band returned to the stage to play their one-song encore… There could only be one song left to play on such a night… It was, of course, ‘Born To Party’ with both the band and the crowd making the most of the last 5 minutes of the show!
It was a top night of thrash metal and everyone was partying. Yes, people lost shoes, drinks were spilt and I’m pretty sure there were a few bruises but each and every single member of the crowd had a great night and will remember the show for a long time to come!
